Children of Light in a World Already Judged
Paul continues the walk: become imitators of God, as beloved children, and walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave Himself up for us. The old world’s sexual commerce, greed, and empty speech are named as belonging to an inheritance they do not have — the inheritance of the Messiah’s kingdom. They were once darkness; now they are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Wake, sleeper, and Christ will shine on you. Look therefore carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. That time-stamp is first-century: the last evil days of a judged age, not a slogan that the world is always equally at the brink. Then the household: wives and husbands mapped onto Christ and the assembly — the great mystery — a present covenant sign, not a later wedding in the sky as the main point.

Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. The ground is beloved, not terrified. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. Fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness must not even be named among them, as becomes saints. Empty words are not harmless. Because of these things the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.
Wrath here is the same covenantal wrath the letter has already located in the old world’s end. They are not those children. They were darkness; they are light. So they must not be joint partakers with them. New Creation ethics are family resemblance. You imitate a Father because you are already children, not because you are trying to avoid being disowned at a later court.
For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
This is Isaiah’s light-language and resurrection-language used as a present summons. Rising here is the conversion of a walk: from hiding to shining. Physical graves are not the point of the citation. The point is that the light of the Lord has already dawned on a people, and remaining in sleep is a refusal of what time it is. In the last days of the old world, waking is how children of light tell the truth about the hour.
Look therefore carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always, subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.
Evil days are the crisis of a dying order — pressure, folly, intoxication, the last noise of a world losing its gods. Redeeming the time is buying up the opportunity of that hour: wise walk, Spirit-filling, thanksgiving, mutual subjection. If “days are evil” is flattened into a timeless gloom, the urgency dies. Paul is telling a first-century church what time it is. After AD 70 the old evil administration is not the lord of the hour. The wise walk remains: filled, thankful, subject to one another, not drunk on the old world’s panic or pleasure.
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. The husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the assembly, being himself the saviour of the body. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present the assembly to Himself glorious, not having spot or wrinkle.
He who loves his own wife loves himself. No one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly, because we are members of His body. “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and the assembly. The load-bearing beam is not a later marriage-metaphor waiting for a sky-wedding to become true. The load-bearing beam is Christ’s present love, present cleansing word, present body. Household order in this letter is New Creation order: self-giving headship, not old-world domination; the assembly already cherished as His flesh.
The chapter holds two tensions without snapping. No fellowship with unfruitful deeds of darkness — including the religious darkness of a world that still called partition holy. And: walk in love, as beloved children; sing; give thanks; subject yourselves to one another. Light that only scolds has not understood the Father. Light that only soothes has not understood the hour.
New Creation people in evil days are neither monks of contempt nor guests of the old feast. They are a singing household whose marriage-sign tells the truth about Christ and the church, and whose walk proves what is pleasing to the Lord. That is how a people live when they already are light, and the darkness is running out of time.
You are not darkness trying to become light. You are light in the Lord. New Creation life walks as beloved children in evil days: awake, wise, Spirit-filled, thankful, and telling the truth about Christ and the church in the way a household loves. The old world’s hour was running out. The light has already claimed you.
When Paul says “the days are evil,” do I hear his generation’s crisis — and then a call to walk as light — or do I hear a timeless gloom that never has to mean a time?
