Ephesians 4

Walk Worthy: One Body, Mature New Humanity

1. Immediate Context

The prisoner in the Lord now begs them to walk worthily of the calling they have already received. Unity is not something they vote into existence. It is something they keep: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. Gifts — apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers — are given until the body reaches mature manhood, the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so they will no longer be children tossed by every wind of teaching. Then the ethical hinge: put off the old humanity, be renewed, put on the new humanity, created in righteousness and holiness of truth. In a generation watching the old covenant identity-world die, that “old man” is not only personal vice. It is the passing human order. Speech, anger, theft, bitterness — these are how the old world tries to keep a chair in the new household.

1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,
2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling,
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in us all.
7 But to each one of us, the grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to people.”
9 Now this, “He ascended”, what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;
12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ,
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;
15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ,
16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts.
19 They, having become callous, gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But you didn’t learn Christ that way,
21 if indeed you heard him and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:
22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit,
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,
27 and don’t give place to the devil.
28 Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.
29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.
30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice.
32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Unity is protected, not invented

Walk worthily of the calling with which you were called — lowliness, humility, patience, bearing with one another in love — giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

Paul does not tell them to assemble a unity out of two covenant programs. He tells them to keep what the Spirit has already made. The seven ones are the architecture of chapter 2’s one new man. In the last days of a world that ran on partition, keeping that unity is the worthy walk. Splitting the body back into Jew-program and Gentile-program is the exact unworthiness this chapter forbids.

Gifts exist to mature the body, not to elevate personalities

To each one grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers — for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

The ascended Christ already fills. Gifts are the present distribution of a finished victory. Their aim is a mature corporate man, not a celebrity bench. Childhood is being tossed. Maturity is growing up in all things into Him who is the head. In a transition generation full of rival teachings about Law, calendars, and hidden knowledge, this is pastoral protection. The body builds itself in love. That is how the new humanity comes of age while the old house falls.

The new humanity is the replacement of the old identity-world

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind. They didn’t know; they were alienated from the life of God. But you didn’t so learn Christ. Put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

Old man / new man is bigger than individual habit. It is two humanities. The old walk is the nations’ futile mind and, behind it, the whole Adamic-and-partitioned world. The new man is the one created in God’s likeness — chapter 2’s one new humanity now worn as clothing. You do not wait for a later species. You put on what God has already created in Christ. Ethics in this letter are alignment with a finished creation, not a ladder back up the wall.

What the new humanity sounds like in a house still under construction

Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbour, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil. Steal no more; labour, that you may have something to give. No corrupt speech — only what builds. Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, slander, malice — put away. Be kind, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

These are not random morals. They are household rules for a temple being fitted together. Falsehood and bitterness rebuild partition inside the one body. Giving is the opposite of the old world’s taking. Forgiveness is the cross applied laterally. The Spirit they must not grieve is the Spirit who already sealed them toward the Day when the purchased people are publicly claimed. New Creation speech is how a people refuse to let the dying world keep a chair at their table.

The day of redemption is the public claiming of a people already sealed

Sealed unto the day of redemption does not mean unsealed until then. A seal is a present mark toward a public day. In this correspondence that day is the same horizon as 1:14 and as the letters to Thessalonica: the Lord publicly claiming what He bought, the old world losing its case, the household standing as His.

Walk worthy, then, is not anxiety. It is family resemblance. You keep the unity because it is already given. You receive gifts because the Head already ascended. You put on the new man because he already exists. You forgive because you have been forgiven. That is Eighth Day ethics in the last hours of the old age — and it is still the walk of the people who live after the wall’s public fall.

9. New Creation Reality

You were called into a unity that already exists. New Creation life keeps that unity, receives gifts as the distribution of an ascended King, puts off the old humanity, and speaks so the house can be fitted together. You are not waiting to become the new man. You put him on because he is already created in Christ.

10. Reflection

Where am I still tossing with old-world teaching — or grieving the Spirit with speech that rebuilds a wall Christ already broke?
