Ephesians 6

Standing Firm in a Finished Victory

1. Immediate Context

The household continues — children and parents, slaves and masters — all relocated “in the Lord,” so that the old world’s vertical violence cannot sit unchallenged inside the new temple. Then the famous armour. Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. The struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Those are the covenant powers of the old administration, not a later video-game cosmology. The evil day is the crisis-day of that generation. The armour is Isaiah’s Messiah-armour now worn by the body: truth, righteousness, gospel-peace, faith, salvation, the word. Prayer keeps them awake. The letter ends in peace, love, and grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise:
3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”
4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
5 Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ,
6 not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
7 with good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men,
8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same good again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.
9 You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace,
16 above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18 with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.
19 Pray for me, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News,
20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
21 But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things.
22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts.
23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love. Amen.

New Creation order in households is allegiance before technique

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and mother — the first commandment with a promise. Fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as to Christ… as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening. You know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

This is not Paul baptising the old world’s violence. It is Paul refusing to let the old world be the last lord in the house. In the Lord. As to Christ. Your Master and theirs is in heaven. No partiality. The one new man of chapter 2 has to reach the kitchen and the workshop or it is still a theory. New Creation begins as a different allegiance inside ordinary rooms, while the public old house is coming down.

The battle is about allegiance, not flesh-and-blood combat

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Flesh and blood would mean the neighbour, the Jew, the Gentile, the master, the slave, the magistrate. Paul forbids that reading. The fight is against the old administration’s powers — the same rulers chapter 3 said were being informed through the church. Wiles, not muscle: deception, accusation, partition, fear. If an Ephesians 6 reading ends in hatred of people, it has already lost the chapter. Stand in the Lord. The strength is His might, the same might that seated the Son in chapter 1.

Rulers and authorities are covenant powers of a dying age

World-rulers of this darkness. This darkness is the age named in 2:2, the days named as evil in 5:16. Heavenly places here are not a later spirit-dimension Paul forgot to map. They are the same heavenly places where the saints are already seated with Christ. The conflict is real because the old names have not yet publicly fallen, and they still accuse, still partition, still intimidate assemblies.

Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. The evil day is a time, not a mood. For the first readers it was the crisis rushing toward the old world’s public end. Standing through that day is the opposite of being moved, the opposite of returning to the wall, the opposite of panicking with the nations. After that day, the same armour is still the clothing of a people who live in a finished victory: they stand, they do not pretend the accuser was never real, and they do not resurrect him as the lord of a new fear.

The armour is Isaiah’s Messiah-clothing, now worn as identity

Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the Good News of peace, the shield of faith to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. This is not a children’s costume. It is Isaiah 11, 52, and 59: the Messiah’s own panoply, the gospel of peace on the mountains, Yahweh’s helmet and breastplate when no man interceded.

Because they are in the seated Son, they wear what He wore. Truth against the lie of partition. Righteousness against condemnation. Peace as shoes — the same peace who broke the wall. Faith against the accuser’s darts. Salvation as head-covering. The word as the only blade. Prayer at all times in the Spirit, watchful, for all the saints, and for Paul the ambassador in chains, that utterance may be given to make known the mystery of the Good News. The armour section ends where chapter 3 began: the mystery, the nations, the prisoner still preaching. That is what the fight was always for.

The letter closes in peace because the victory is already the frame

Peace to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love. After heavenly places, walls, mysteries, armour, and evil days, the last taste is peace, love, faith, grace.

Incorruptible love is love that does not rot with the old age. It outlasts the powers. Tychicus will tell them everything, that they may be comforted. New Creation life on this side of the evil day is still a standing life: truth on, peace on the feet, the word in the mouth, prayer for the saints, and an unrotting love for the Lord who already sits. You do not fight for a victory that has not happened. You stand in one that has — and you refuse to let flesh and blood become the enemy Christ already refused to name as the real one.

9. New Creation Reality

The strength is His might. The seating is already done. The armour is already true of you in Christ: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the word. New Creation life stands in a finished victory. It refuses to fight flesh and blood. It loves the Lord with a love that does not rot when old powers fall.

10. Reflection

When I put on Ephesians 6, am I standing in Christ’s finished victory — or looking for a flesh-and-blood enemy the chapter told me not to wrestle?
