Ephesians 3
The Mystery Once Hidden, Now Revealed
1. Immediate Context
Paul now names his chains as part of the story: the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles. The stewardship given to him is not a later program. It is the now-revealed mystery that Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News. This mystery was hidden for ages in God, and has now been revealed to the apostles and prophets in the Spirit. The assembly becomes the public announcement of the multi-coloured wisdom of God to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places — the old powers watching their map dissolve. Then Paul kneels: strengthened in the inner person, Christ at home in the heart, rooted in love, filled toward all the fullness of God. Prayer flows from fulfillment, not from a sense that the mystery is still locked.

2 if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you,
3 how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
4 by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ,
5 which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit,
6 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,
7 of which I was made a servant according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.
8 To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
9 and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ,
10 to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places,
11 according to the eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
13 Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.
14 For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person,
17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth,
19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
21 to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
3. Fulfillment Notes
- Now revealed: “As it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit” (v. 5) — present unveiling, not a postponed secret.
- Fellow heirs: The content of the mystery (v. 6) is Gentile co-inheritance in one body now, the one new man of chapter 2 stated as gospel.
- Through the assembly: God’s wisdom is made known to the rulers and authorities now (v. 10), not after a later cosmic sequel.
- Eternal purpose: Accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord (v. 11). Access with confidence is present (v. 12).
4. Annotations
- Stewardship / administration — oikonomia; Paul is a household manager of a revealed plan, not an inventor of a later age.
- Unsearchable riches — not unrevealed riches. They are being preached to the nations.
- Rulers and authorities in the heavenly places — the old administration’s powers, informed by a church that should not exist on their map.
- The fullness of God — the aim of the prayer is present capacity to know love that surpasses knowledge, not a later ontological upgrade only.
5. Fulfillment Commentary
Mystery means previously hidden, now revealed
For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles. The chains are not an interruption of the mission. They are the cost of it. The stewardship of the grace of God given him for them is the revelation of the mystery, which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed.
Now is the word later systems keep moving. Paul will not let it move. What God planned for ages is on the table in the apostolic generation. Hiddenness was then. Announcement is now. A “mystery” that remains a chart for later centuries has been renamed. In Paul it is an open secret being preached.
Gentile inclusion is the heart of the mystery
To be specific: that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of His promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News. Three fellow-words. Not guests. Not a parenthesis. Not a delayed people waiting while another program finishes. Co-heirs, co-body, co-sharers.
This is chapter 2’s one new man stated as the content of Paul’s gospel. The nations do not get in by DNA. They get in by the Good News. Israel’s remnant does not keep the inheritance by wall. They keep it in the Messiah with the nations. The prisoner-for-the-Gentiles is the living parable of that mystery. If you push Gentile inclusion into a later age, you empty the reason Paul is in chains.
Rulers and authorities are being informed, not awaited
To the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. The church is the exhibit. The old powers are the audience. The wisdom is multi-coloured: Jew and Gentile as one household, which their map forbade.
Accomplished. Eternal purpose, accomplished in Christ Jesus. Access with confidence through faith in Him. Paul asks them not to lose heart at his tribulations, which are their glory. The suffering of the apostle for the nations is not a sign that the plan failed. It is the plan’s public cost in the last days of the wall-world. AD 70 will finish the demolition those powers could not stop.
Prayer flows from fulfillment, not from lack
For this cause he bows his knees to the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. The request is strength in the inner person through the Spirit, that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith, rooted and grounded in love, able to comprehend with all the saints the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that they may be filled with all the fullness of God.
This is not a prayer that God would one day include them. They are already fellow heirs. It is a prayer that a people who already have access would have inner capacity to live inside what is true. New Creation prayer is not begging at a locked door. It is being strengthened to inhabit a house God already named you into.
He is able to do more — because the power is already at work
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. The power is presently working in them. Glory is located in the assembly and in Christ Jesus — together.
All generations receive that glory as the overflow of a purpose already accomplished, not as people waiting for the mystery to start. You live after the unveiling. The prisoner’s gospel is your inclusion. The fullness of God is not a later climate. It is the love of Christ known in a people the old rulers did not plan for — and could not prevent.
