Ephesians 2

From Covenant Death to One New Humanity

1. Immediate Context

Paul now tells the Gentiles their former address and their present one. You were dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to the age of this world, children of wrath even as the rest. That death is covenant-status language: alienation, not the absence of a pulse. Physical mortality was always dust-to-dust. What the old Adamic-and-Mosaic order produced was condemnation and distance. God made them alive with Christ, raised them, seated them. Then the hinge of the whole Bible for the nations: remember that you, the Gentiles in the flesh, were called Uncircumcision, separate from Messiah, alienated from Israel’s commonwealth, strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who were far off are made near. He is our peace. The dividing wall is down. One new humanity stands where two old identities fought.

1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience.
3 We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,
5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;
8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, that no one would boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision” (in the flesh, made by hands),
12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of separation,
15 having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace,
16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility through it.
17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.
18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God,
20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Dead describes covenant status, not the absence of a body

You were made alive when you were dead through trespasses and sins. Paul is not talking about stopped breath. He is saying they lived under the old Adamic order — the age of this world, the prince of the power of the air, the sons of disobedience — and that order produces death as alienation. Children of wrath, even as the rest. Wrath here is the same covenantal wrath Romans and 1 Thessalonians name for that horizon.

God, being rich in mercy, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with Him, and made us to sit with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Seating is shared. What chapter 1 said of the Son, chapter 2 says of the people in the Son. The transfer is past tense. You do not wait to be made alive. You were. The sting of that old condemnation is gone. Sheol does not hold the people seated with Him.

Grace is not a later system. It is how the transfer happened

By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. Works do not get you in. They are the walk of a people already created.

This is the same grace James will not let become empty talk, and the same faith Paul will not let become a wall-climbing exercise. The nations do not enter by becoming Jews. Jews do not remain by Law-works. Both are God’s workmanship in the Messiah. That is why boasting dies. The old world ran on pedigree and performance. The new humanity runs on gift.

Remember what you were, so you can tell the truth about nearness

Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision in the flesh, made by hands — that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world. This is the old map. It is not a description of a Gentile in Christ now. It is the former address Paul commands them to remember so they will never rebuild it.

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ. Nearness is accomplished. The sin that structured that distance was the old covenant world’s exclusion — Israel’s wall and the nations’ idolatry together. It is not the present identity of those who have been brought near. If you still speak of yourself as far off after Ephesians 2:13, you are reading the remember-clause as if the but-now never arrived.

The Law was the dividing wall. He is our peace

For He is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition, having abolished in His flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man of the two, making peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.

The wall in the Jerusalem temple complex was a parable in stone: death for the Gentile who crossed. Torah-as-boundary did the same work socially. Paul says that wall is broken in the Messiah’s flesh. Not postponed. Not lowered. Broken. He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near. Through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. One Spirit. One access. One body. AD 70 will take the stone wall down in public. The cross had already taken it down in covenant fact.

You are no longer strangers. You are the temple

So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God, being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

The temple is not future architecture. It is the present covenant dwelling of God among a people who used to be two. New Creation life is household life: citizenship, cornerstone, fitted stones, God at home by the Spirit. The old house in Jerusalem was in its last days when this was written. The new house was already going up. You do not wait to become God’s dwelling. You are being built as that dwelling because the wall is already down and the one new man already exists in Christ.

9. New Creation Reality

You were far off. You are near. The wall is down. The one new man already exists in Christ, and you are in Him — fellow citizen, household member, living stone. New Creation life does not rebuild what His flesh abolished. It lives as the temple God already inhabits by the Spirit.

10. Reflection

Do I still speak as if I were a stranger to the covenants — or have I let the but-now of Ephesians 2:13 become my actual address?
