Ephesians 1

Chosen, Raised, and Seated in Christ

1. Immediate Context

Paul writes as an apostle of Christ Jesus to the saints at Ephesus — a predominantly Gentile assembly in a city of temples, magic, and civic power — during the last generation of the Old Covenant age. The letter does not begin with a search for blessing. It begins with a past-tense inventory: chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, sealed, seated. The same chapter that blesses God for what He has already done in Christ also names the administration of the fullness of the times — the summing up of all things in the Messiah. That summing-up is not a later age waiting to start. It is the public settling of a reign already in force while the old temple-world still stands, and about to fall.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love,
5 having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,
6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved.
7 In him we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
8 which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,
9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him
10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, in him.
11 We were also assigned an inheritance in him, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who does all things after the counsel of his will,
12 to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ.
13 In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.
15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you and the love which you have toward all the saints,
16 don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers,
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him,
18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might
20 which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,
21 far above all rule, authority, power, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.
22 He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,
23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Every spiritual blessing is already located in the heavenly places

Paul does not open Ephesians with a ladder. He opens with a location. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. The verb is past. The place is the throne-realm. The sphere is “in Christ.” Nothing in verses 3–14 is written as a delayed package. Chosen, holy, adopted, graced, redeemed, forgiven, made to know the mystery, given an inheritance, sealed.

“Heavenly places” is not code for “when you die.” It is the realm from which the old powers are already named as beneath the Son’s feet. In a city that trusted Artemis and civic rank, Paul locates the assembly above those authorities in the Messiah. New Creation life begins by hearing that you are already there, not by climbing toward a later seating.

Election is corporate and Christ-centred — the people of the Son

He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before Him in love, having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ. This is not a private lottery detached from history. It is God’s intention to have a family in the Son. Adoption here is covenant sonship, the status Israel carried as a name and that now belongs to all who are in the Beloved.

To the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. Identity is gift, not pedigree. In the last days of a world that still sorted people by blood, calendar, and wall, Paul says the family was always going to be defined in Christ. That is why Gentile believers at Ephesus can hear “us” without becoming Jews, and Jewish believers can hear “us” without remaining the wall.

The mystery is no longer hidden — the times are in their fullness

He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Him, to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth. Mystery in Paul is not a riddle for later charts. It is what was hidden and has now been unveiled.

Fullness of the times is the same claim as Galatians 4:4 and Mark 1:15. The summing-up is the Messiah as head of a single world: heaven and earth, Jew and Gentile, the old administration yielding to the new. Chapter 3 will name the Gentile share of that mystery in plain speech. Chapter 1 already says the administration is running. AD 70 will make the old house’s end public. The summing-up does not wait for a later cosmos to be invented.

Sealed now, inheritance as present down payment

In Him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation — in Him, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. The Ephesian Gentiles are specifically in view in the “you also.” They heard, they believed, they were sealed.

A pledge is not a postponement. It is a first installment of what is already owned. Redemption of the purchased possession in this letter’s horizon is the public claiming of a people already bought — the same transition 1 Thessalonians called being with the Lord always, and Hebrews called the way into the holy place made manifest. Physical mortality was not the inheritance. Covenant belonging was. The Spirit already marks that belonging.

The resurrection has already seated the Son above every name of the old world

Paul prays that they may know the hope of His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe — the same power He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule, authority, power, dominion, and every name named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.

The seating is past. The “age to come” is the age arriving as the old one dies — not a third age after a later delay. He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the assembly, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. The church does not wait for a King to be installed. The King is installed, and the body is His fullness already. Eyes opened to that present authority is the first need of New Creation people living through the collapse of the old names.

9. New Creation Reality

You are not climbing toward blessing. You have been blessed in the heavenly places in Christ. Chosen, adopted, redeemed, sealed, and joined to a Son already seated above every old-world name. New Creation life starts from that seating — not from fear that the King is still waiting to sit down.

10. Reflection

When I pray Ephesians 1, do I hear a past-tense location I already occupy — or a future package I am still trying to earn?
