1 Corinthians 2 — The Mind of Christ

Immediate Context

Chapter 1 killed party-boasting. Chapter 2 explains how Paul arrived in Corinth: not with excellence of speech, but with Christ crucified. The “rulers of this world” are the authorities of that covenant age — the ones who crucified the Lord of glory and are coming to nothing. The Spirit already discloses what Isaiah said eye had not seen. The natural man of the old order cannot receive it. The assembly already has the mind of Christ.

Scripture (WEB)

1When I came to you, brothers, I didn’t come with excellence of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 4My speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5that your faith wouldn’t stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

6We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown, yet a wisdom not of this world nor of the rulers of this world who are coming to nothing. 7But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory, 8which none of the rulers of this world has known. For had they known it, they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory.

9“Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.” 10But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. 12But we received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God. 14Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him. 16“For who has known the mind of the Lord that he should instruct him?” But we have Christ’s mind.

Fulfillment Notes

1) “Rulers of this world coming to nothing” names first-century authorities of the old age, not later cosmology.

2) They crucified the Lord of glory — the charge sheet is historical and covenantal.

3) What eye had not seen is already revealed by the Spirit to the assembly.

4) The natural man is the old-order hearer who still measures God by that age’s wisdom.

5) “We have Christ’s mind” is present possession, not a postponed upgrade.

Annotations

rulers of this world: the authorities of that covenant age — Judean leadership and the public order that condemned the Messiah.
coming to nothing: their administration is already on a short clock toward AD 70.
mystery: the hidden wisdom now disclosed, not a locked vault for a later epoch.
natural man: the psychikos hearer still seated in flesh-wisdom and old-age measurement.
Christ’s mind: shared discernment given by the Spirit, the new world’s way of seeing.

Fulfillment Commentary

1) Crucified, Not Marketed

Paul arrives in weakness, fear, and trembling. That is not a personality footnote. It is a refusal to baptize the gospel in Corinth’s speech-market. Faith that stands in human wisdom will fall when the speaker leaves. Faith that stands in the power of God is tied to the crucified Christ. The demonstration of the Spirit is not a later sideshow. It is how the news landed in a city that sold persuasion. If the message needs the old room’s excellence, it is no longer the testimony of God. Chapter 1 emptied the boast. Chapter 2 empties the method that produced the boast.

2) Rulers Coming to Nothing

The wisdom Paul speaks is not of this world and not of the rulers of this world who are coming to nothing. Those rulers crucified the Lord of glory. That sentence names the court that sat in Jerusalem and the public order that consented. “Coming to nothing” is not a vague spiritual mood. It is the scheduled end of that administration. Before the worlds — before those covenant worlds — God foreordained wisdom for the glory of the people now receiving the Spirit. The old rulers did not know it. Their ignorance was not an accident of library access. It was the blindness of an age that measured glory by signs, lineage, and control of the house. When the house fell, the rulers of that world were publicly exposed as empty.

3) Already Revealed Through the Spirit

Isaiah’s “eye has not seen” is often postponed into a later sky. Paul will not allow it. “To us, God revealed them through the Spirit.” The prepared things are given now. The Spirit searches the deep things of God and teaches words the old wisdom cannot generate. The assembly received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit from God, in order to know what was freely given. Freely given is the opposite of temple-metered access. What the old world hid behind furniture and expertise is open in the Spirit. The delay proverb dies here. The hidden wisdom is no longer hidden from those who love Him.

4) The Natural Man and the Mind of Christ

The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit. They are foolishness to him. That is chapter 1’s Greek and Jew still sitting in their stalls. Spiritual discernment is not a temperament. It is the new world’s capacity, given because the Spirit has been poured out in the last days of the old age. “We have Christ’s mind” is the remnant’s possession while the old rulers still look solid. What this chapter ends is the claim that God can only be known through the debate of that age. The mind of the Lord is no longer locked behind a scribe. It is shared with those in the Son.

New Creation Reality

You already received the Spirit from God. What was prepared for those who love Him has been revealed. You are not waiting for a mind. You have Christ’s mind. Physical mortality continues. The spirit of the world — measurement by prestige and persuasion — is not your tutor.

Reflection

Where are you still asking the old age’s rulers to certify what the Spirit has already given?
