Paul writes from the mid-50s to a mixed assembly in Roman Corinth. Chloe’s household has reported factions. “This age” still has scribes, sign-seekers, and Greek wisdom-markets. Party spirit is a denial of the cross that has already emptied that age’s boast.
2to the assembly of God which is at Corinth—those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints…
7waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8who will also confirm you until the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
18For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 20Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?
30Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.
“Waiting for the revelation” and “the day of our Lord” are not a blank check for twenty centuries. Paul writes inside this generation. Confirmation “until the end” is until the end of that age. When Jerusalem’s house fell, the debate of that age lost its building. What ended is the old world’s claim to be the court where God is known.
You are already in Christ Jesus. Wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption are a location, not a ladder. What this chapter ends is the need to borrow a name — teacher, class, tribe — in order to stand.
