The factions of chapter 1 are still walking. Paul calls that flesh. Planting and watering are servant work; increase belongs to God. The assembly is God’s field and God’s building. A Day of fire will test the work built on the one foundation, Jesus Christ. Then the sentence that relocates glory: you are God’s temple, and the Spirit lives in you — while another house still stands in Jerusalem.
1Brothers, I couldn’t speak to you as to spiritual, but as to fleshly, as to babies in Christ. 3for you are still fleshly. For insofar as there is jealousy, strife, and factions among you, aren’t you fleshly? 5Who then is Apollos, and who is Paul, but servants through whom you believed, and each as the Lord gave to him? 6I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase. 9For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s farming, God’s building.
11For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ. 13each man’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself will test what sort of work each man’s work is. 16Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, which you are.
18If anyone thinks that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. 21Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 23and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
1) Factions are flesh — old-age walking inside a people already called saints.
2) The only foundation is Jesus Christ; teachers are servants, not temples.
3) “The Day” and the fire test that generation’s work as the old house comes down.
4) “You are God’s temple” relocates glory off Zion’s furniture onto the assembly.
5) Boasting in men is finished because all things are already theirs in Christ.
Paul could not speak to them as spiritual because jealousy and strife still named the room. “I follow Paul / I follow Apollos” is not a discipleship style. It is flesh walking. Babies in Christ are not insulted for being new. They are diagnosed for importing Corinth’s patronage into the assembly. Servants plant and water. God gives the increase. The moment a servant becomes a shrine, the field is misnamed. You are God’s farming. You are God’s building. The grammar refuses to let a personality own the crop.
No one can lay another foundation than Jesus Christ. Gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, straw — the materials are the quality of work built on that foundation. The Day declares it by fire. That Day is not a floating end-of-cosmos poster. Paul writes inside the generation Jesus marked. Work built as a personality cult will not survive the ordeal that ends the old administration. A man may himself be saved as through fire while the hay burns. That is mercy aimed at builders, not a later furnace mythology. The test is public and covenantal. When the old house burned, works that had copied its prestige were exposed.
“Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” The question assumes they should already know. Glory has moved. The Spirit does not wait for 70 to find an address. Destroying this temple — tearing the assembly by faction, predation, or old-world wisdom — is an assault God answers. The holiness sentence is corporate: “which you are.” Zion’s furniture is already on borrowed time because the dwelling is a people. AD 70 does not create the temple. It removes the vacant building after the Spirit has already taken up residence in the assembly.
Let no one boast in men. Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things present, things to come — all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. The list refuses scarcity. You do not need to pick a teacher to own a sliver of the gift. Death is on the list as an item that cannot unseat you, not as a power still running the old accusation. What ends is Death used as a threat-system of the old age — not a still-open Sheol. Belonging is inverted: teachers belong to the people, the people belong to Christ, Christ belongs to God. That is the new world’s org chart. Party spirit is a refusal to read it.
You are God’s temple. The Spirit lives in you. Teachers are servants, not owners. What this chapter ends is the need to build your name on a human foundation. The one foundation is already laid.
Where are you still treating a servant as a temple, instead of resting as the dwelling God already inhabits?
