No Confidence in the Flesh: Citizenship from Heaven
Rejoice in the Lord. The same things again, because safety requires it: beware of the dogs, the evil workers, the mutilation. We are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Flesh here is covenant-status — pedigree, tribe, Law-blamelessness — not mere physicality. Paul lists his old résumé and counts it loss for Christ. Righteousness is relocated: not from the Law, but through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God by faith. He wants to know Christ, the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings, becoming conformed to His death, if by any means he may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Pressing on is not insecurity. It is a man already grasped by Christ, pursuing the goal of the upward calling. Then the civic climax: many walk as enemies of the cross; their end is destruction; their god is the belly; their glory is in their shame; they mind earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our humiliation-body to be conformed to the body of His glory. Heaven is the source of authority, not a destination to flee into. The transformation is covenantal and embodied: a people no longer marked by the old humiliation-order, but by the glory of an already-reigning Lord — not a promise that physical mortality as created dust has been cancelled.

Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision. For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh — though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh.
If anyone else thinks they have confidence in the flesh, Paul more: eighth-day circumcision, stock of Israel, tribe of Benjamin, Hebrew of Hebrews, Pharisee, zealous persecutor, blameless in Law-righteousness. That list is the old world in one man. Flesh here is what you boast in before God as your belonging. New Creation circumcision is Spirit, boast in Christ, no confidence in that list. The nations are not saved by getting the knife. Israel is not kept by keeping it as wall. We are the circumcision — the one people of the Spirit.
What things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ. Yes, most certainly, I count all things to be loss for the excelling knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them dung, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.
Found in Him is the new location. Law-righteousness of my own is the old one. This is not Paul despising Torah as evil. It is Paul refusing Torah as a belonging-system now that the Messiah has been named Lord. To know Him, the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings, becoming conformed to His death — that is the gain. Resurrection-language here is participatory: sharing the Messiah’s path from death-as-the-old-world to life-as-the-new, not a hobby of later grave-mechanics. The death that defined the old résumé is the one Paul has already died to.
Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are mature, think this way.
Grasped first. Then pressing. Maturity is this mind, not a boast of arrival. Forgetting what is behind includes the résumé he just listed — and any rival version of “we have already arrived” that would stop a church running. Only, to the extent that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule. New Creation growth is not proving you are in. It is living further into the Christ who already seized you. The old world either boasts in flesh or despairs. Paul runs because he is held.
Brothers, be imitators together of me, and note those who walk this way, even as you have us for an example. For many walk, of whom I told you often, and now tell you even weeping, as enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who think about earthly things.
Earthly things in this contrast is the old-order mind: appetite, shame-as-glory, the cross as offence. Their end is destruction — the same destruction-token of 1:28, the same end of the old world. For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. Politeuma: a commonwealth. Philippi understood colonies whose law came from Rome. Paul names a colony whose law comes from the throne. Heaven is source, not escape-hatch. You live Philippi under heaven’s politics now. Waiting for the Saviour from there is waiting for that commonwealth’s public Lord to finish the conformation of His people in the crisis of that generation — not waiting to abandon the earth He already claims.
Who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of His glory, according to the working by which He is able even to subject all things to Himself. The humiliation-body is the low estate of a people still walking through a world of persecution, mortality, and old-order shame. The glory-body is the Messiah’s own form — the risen Lord’s public likeness, the end of that humiliation as the defining story.
Paul does not say physical mortality as created dust is abolished. Dust still returns to dust; that was never the sting he spent his life on. The sting is condemnation, exclusion, the old résumé, the belly-god, the earthly mind. Conformed to the body of His glory is a people whose embodied life is no longer ruled by that humiliation-order, but by the working of the One who can subject all things to Himself — the same subjecting of Ephesians 1. On this side of the Day, you already belong to that commonwealth. You already have no confidence in the flesh. You already press on because you are grasped. The Lord from heaven is the source of that life, not a ticket out of being human.
You are the circumcision: Spirit, boast in Christ, no confidence in the flesh. Your commonwealth is already from heaven. New Creation identity is not a résumé and not a later escape from being human. It is being found in Him, pressing on because you are grasped, and living Philippi under a Lord who can subject all things to Himself.
Where might I still be drawing confidence from things Christ has already counted as loss — pedigree, performance, or a flesh-boundary He has already ended?
