Mark 2

The Son of Man forgives sins on earth, pours new wine, and takes the Sabbath. The old skins do not survive that claim.

Immediate Context

Jesus is back in Capernaum, speaking the word in a packed house, then by the sea, then in Levi’s house, then in the grain fields. He addresses a paralytic and the scribes who guard forgiveness, tax collectors the Pharisees name unclean, John’s disciples who still fast under the old piety, and Sabbath-keepers who police the sign of Moses. The covenant moment is the Kingdom already at hand. These claims matter then because they take from the Temple, the table-laws, and the Sabbath the authority those institutions thought they still held, in the years that close when the house falls.

Scripture Text (WEB)

1 When he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was at home. 2 Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around the door; and he spoke the word to them. 3 Four people came, carrying a paralytic to him. 4 When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on. 5 Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

6 But there were some of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your bed, and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—

11 “I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.” 12 He arose, and immediately took up the mat and went out in front of them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” 13 He went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them. 14 As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him. 15 He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him.

16 The scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” 18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?” 19 Jesus said to them, “Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can’t fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.

21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made. 22 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.” 23 He was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?” 25 He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him?

26 How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” 27 He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

Fulfillment Commentary

1) Forgiveness leaves the Temple and walks the floor

The first word to the man on the mat is not walk. It is that his sins are forgiven. The scribes are right about one thing: forgiveness is God’s act. They are wrong about where that act now sits. The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Earth here is this land, this house, this generation. The Temple’s atonement calendar is not asked for a date. A man stands in Capernaum and speaks the verdict the sanctuary reserved to itself.

The rise from the mat is the pledge of that verdict. It is not the emptying of Hades. It is not the corporate raising Daniel timed to the trouble of his people. It is a sign given in the ministry years that the word which forgives also raises. The people who cannot walk under the old administration are told to stand. When the house falls, the monopoly on forgiveness falls with it. What remains is the Son’s word. Condemnation as the standing status of those under that law ends with that age. Physical dust still receives bodies. The ledger the scribes were guarding does not.

2) The table is already past the purity line

Levi rises from the tax office the way the paralytic rose from the mat. The call creates the disciple. The house fills with people the Pharisees name sinners. The old righteousness is a closed table. The physician sits with the sick because the remnant is being drawn from the wrong side of the line the law drew. That gathering is the shape of the one new man while the wall still stands. When the wall comes down, this table is what is left.

3) New wine bursts the skins of Moses

John’s disciples fast. The Pharisees fast. Jesus’ disciples do not, because the bridegroom is with them. The taking away of the bridegroom is the cross, not a postponement of the wedding to another age. After he is taken they will fast in that day — the short grief of the interval, not a new religion of absence. Then the new wine is named. Unshrunk cloth on an old garment tears it. New wine in old skins bursts them. The skins are the Mosaic forms: sacrifice, calendar, table-laws, Sabbath as covenant badge. The wine is the New Covenant already present in him. The skins are destroyed when the Temple falls and the administration those skins belonged to is taken away. Fresh skins are the people made by his blood, not a repaired Judaism.

4) Lord of the sign that marked the old world

Grain in the hand on the seventh day is enough to start the trial. The Pharisees hear a law being broken. Jesus hears David in the house of God, eating what only priests eat, in the days of need. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Then the sentence that ends the argument: the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. Sabbath was the weekly seal of the Sinai world. To claim lordship over it is to claim the world that seal marked. That claim is made in the fields, in the ministry years. It is finished when that world ends. Colossians calls the Sabbath a shadow. The body is Christ. Shadows do not survive the fall of the house that cast them.

5) What ended, and what the word gave

Ended with that age: the Temple as the place where sins wait for a day; the closed table of the righteous; fasting as the piety of an absent groom; Sabbath as the badge that told Israel who belonged; the skins that tried to hold a covenant they could not hold. Given in their place: forgiveness spoken by the Son on earth, a table that gathers the excluded, wine that does not go back into Moses, a people whose rest is the Son rather than a day, New Creation life under an authority already exercised. The scribes asked who can forgive but God. The generation that heard the answer also saw the sanctuary thrown down. The authority announced in the packed house is the authority that remains.

New Creation Reality

Forgiveness is not queued at a sanctuary. The table is not closed. The skins are gone. Rest is the Son, not a badge. You live under the word spoken on that floor: sins forgiven, sinner called, wine poured, Sabbath claimed. Identity is union. Freedom is the end of the ledger those scribes were keeping.

Reflection

Where are you still treating old skins — a ledger, a closed table, a badge of rest — as if the Son had not already spoken forgiveness on earth?
