Zechariah 5

The Execution of the Curse and the Relocation of the Harlot

1. Judicial Context: The Sod (Divine Council)

Zechariah 5 details two severe legal actions taken by the Divine Council. Following the supply of the New Temple established in Chapter 4, the Council turns its jurisdiction toward the apostasy of the Old Covenant system. The sixth vision (the Flying Scroll) is an open Judicial Warrant—the specific execution of the Covenantal Curses against those who have turned the House into a "den of thieves." The seventh vision (the Woman in the Ephah) is a formal Deportation Order. It mandates the legal extraction of "Wickedness" (the apostate religious system) from the Covenant land, sealing it under a heavy decree, and relocating it to Shinar (Babylon). This chapter establishes the legal architecture for the AD 70 destruction of Jerusalem and the identification of "Mystery Babylon."

2. Scripture (WEB Technical)

1 Then I lifted up my eyes again and saw, and behold, a flying scroll. 2 He said to me, "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits."
3 Then he said to me, "This is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land; for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to it on the one side; and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to it on the other side. 4 I will cause it to go out," says Yahweh of Armies, "and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the middle of his house, and will consume it with its timber and its stones."
5 Then the angel who talked with me went out and said to me, "Lift up your eyes now, and see what this is that is going out." 6 I said, "What is it?" He said, "This is the ephah basket that is going out." He said moreover, "This is their appearance in all the land— 7 (and behold, a lead cover was lifted up)—and there was a woman sitting in the middle of the ephah."
8 He said, "This is Wickedness;" and he threw her down into the middle of the ephah; and he threw the weight of lead on its mouth. 9 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there were two women and the wind was in their wings. Now they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah between earth and the sky.
10 Then I said to the angel who talked with me, "Where are these carrying the ephah?" 11 He said to me, "To build her a house in the land of Shinar. When it is prepared, she will be set there in her own place."

4. Annotations: Courtroom Terminology

Flying Scroll (Megillah Aphah)

An open, unrolled legal document visible to all. It represents an active, published warrant of the Council.

The Curse (Alah)

Specifically the sworn covenantal sanctions detailed in Deuteronomy 28. It is not arbitrary anger, but the precise execution of contractual penalties.

Weight of Lead (Ebhen Opheret)

A heavy seal. In legal proceedings, casting the lead weight signifies a fixed, unalterable judgment from which the defendant cannot escape.

Wings of a Stork

Under Levitical law, the stork was an "unclean" bird. The Council uses unclean, providential agents (typifying the Roman armies) to carry out the deportation.

5. Courtroom Commentary: The Warrant and the Deportation

Zechariah 5 splits the Council’s judgment into two devastating legal maneuvers. The Flying Scroll is a warrant for perjury and theft. For centuries, the apostate leaders had violated the Covenant within the very dimensions of the Temple porch. The Council declares that the "Curse" will enter the physical House and permanently consume its "timber and stones." This warrant was held in abeyance until the first century, when Jesus announced that the house was left "desolate."

Following the warrant is the Deportation Order. The Woman in the Ephah personifies the corporate guilt of the nation. The Council seals her under a lead weight, signifying the closure of her probationary period. By airlifting this system to "Shinar," the Council legally strips Jerusalem of its holy status, formally branding the apostate religious system as "Babylon." This judicial relocation cleared the legal title of the land, allowing the New Jerusalem (the Church) to be established as the exclusive, legitimate Covenant administration on earth.

8. New Creation Reality (Spiritual Instruction)

In the New Creation era, there is no "Flying Scroll" of covenantal curses hovering over your life. Spiritual Instruction: The Law's warrant was fully executed upon the old system, consuming its timber and stones in AD 70.

The apostate system of works and legalism ("Wickedness") has been sealed with lead and relocated to Babylon; it has no jurisdiction in the New Jerusalem where you reside. Practical Application: Do not live under the fear of the Curse. The Divine Council has already served the eviction notice to the systems of flesh and legalism. You belong to the City that cannot be consumed, operating entirely under the grace and supply of the New Covenant administration.

9. Reflection

Are you still living in fear of the "Flying Scroll" of the Law's curses, or are you resting in the New Jerusalem, knowing the old harlot system has been permanently deported?
