The Opened Fountain and the Refining of the Remnant
1. Immediate Context
Zechariah 13 provides the judicial remedy for the mourning described in Chapter 12. Having "looked upon the Pierced One," the remnant is now presented with an "opened fountain" for the legal removal of sin and uncleanness. This chapter documents the termination of the "spirit of uncleanness" and the false prophetic office that had plagued Israel. It culminates in a definitive judicial decree: the "striking" of the Shepherd, which results in the scattering of the sheep and the subsequent "refining" of the third part through the fire. This provides the prophetic map for Gethsemane, the Cross, and the first-century "Great Tribulation" (AD 66–70), which served as the furnace for the New Covenant remnant.
2. Scripture (WEB)
1 "In that day there will be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. 2 It will happen in that day," says Yahweh of Armies, "that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will no more be remembered; and also I will cause the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness to pass out of the land. 3 It will happen that, when anyone still prophesies, then his father and his mother who bore him will tell him, 'You must not live, for you speak lies in the name of Yahweh;' and his father and his mother who bore him will thrust him through when he prophesies. 4 It will happen in that day, that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision, when he prophesies; neither will they wear a hairy mantle to deceive: 5 but he will say, 'I am no prophet, I am a tiller of the ground; for I have been made a bondservant from my youth.' 6 One will say to him, 'What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.' 7 "Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is my close companion," says Yahweh of Armies. "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones. 8 It will happen that in all the land," says Yahweh, "two parts in it will be cut off and die; but the third will be left in it. 9 I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, 'It is my people;' and they will say, 'Yahweh is my God.'"
3. Fulfillment Notes
The Opened Fountain (v. 1): Decisively fulfilled in the blood of Christ at the Cross and the subsequent "washing of regeneration" made available at Pentecost. This fountain replaced the repetitive ritual washings of the Temple system.
Removal of the Spirit of Uncleanness (v. 2): Signifies the legal termination of the demonic and apostate influence that fueled the Old Covenant rebellion. In the New Covenant, the "Holy Spirit" replaces the "spirit of uncleanness."
The Stricken Shepherd (v. 7): Explicitly applied by Jesus to Himself in Matthew 26:31 during the night of His betrayal. The "Sword" of divine justice was awakened against the Shepherd (Christ) to satisfy the Covenant debt.
Scattering of the Sheep (v. 7): Fulfilled when the disciples fled Gethsemane, and typologically fulfilled in the scattering of the first-century Jewish nation.
The Refined Third (vv. 8–9): Refers to the "remnant" of Israel. While two-thirds of the nation perished in the AD 70 judgment ("cut off and die"), the "third part" (the Christian remnant) was refined through the "fiery trial" of the Great Tribulation and emerged as the "people of God" in the New Creation.
4. Annotations
Fountain: (Hebrew: maqor) A spring or source of living water; signifies a continuous, inexhaustible supply.
Hairy Mantle: The traditional garment of a prophet (like Elijah). Its rejection in v. 4 indicates the total discrediting of the false prophetic office.
Close Companion: (Hebrew: amiti) A technical term for an equal or an associate; indicates the unique, divine status of the Shepherd.
Wounds between your arms: (v. 6) In context, these were self-inflicted wounds or marks of idolatrous prophets, though often used as a typological secondary application to Christ.
Refine as Silver: A process of heating to remove dross, representing the judicial purification of the Church through persecution.
5. Fulfillment Commentary
The Judicial Purging of the Spirit
In verses 1–6, Zechariah documents the legal "cleansing" of the land. The opening of the fountain (v. 1) was the judicial act that made the Old Covenant Temple washings obsolete. Parallel to this cleansing was the removal of the "spirit of uncleanness." By the time of the first-century transition, the religious system had become a "cage of every unclean and hateful bird" (Revelation 18:2). Zechariah prophesies that the zeal for truth would become so intense that even parents would "thrust through" a child who spoke lies in Yahweh's name. This indicates that in the New Covenant, the "truth of the Gospel" would supersede ethnic and familial ties, a reality Jesus echoed when He said He came to bring a sword that would divide households.
The Sword and the Furnace
The "Awake, O Sword" decree in verse 7 is the pivot of redemptive history. It is the Father’s judicial command against the Son ("the man who is my close companion"). The striking of the Shepherd was the event that satisfied the Law and allowed the "fountain" to flow. However, it also triggered the "scattering" of the old flock. Verses 8–9 describe the AD 66–70 division of the land. Two parts (the apostate nation) were "cut off" in the war with Rome. The "third part"—the apostolic Church—was brought "through the fire." This was the "fiery trial" mentioned by Peter (1 Peter 4:12). This remnant was refined, not destroyed, emerging from the desolation of AD 70 as the "refined gold" of the New Creation, who can legally say, "Yahweh is my God."

8. New Creation Reality (Spiritual Instruction)
In the New Creation era, you do not look for a "fountain" to be opened; you reside in the flow of the one that has never been closed. Spiritual Instruction: You have been refined through the work of Christ; you are no longer defined by the "dross" of your past.
The "spirit of uncleanness" has been legally removed from your life. You are not subject to the "lies" of false prophetic voices that attempt to pull you back into the old world. Practical Application: Recognize that the "Sword" has already been struck against your Shepherd, meaning there is no sword of judgment left for you. You are the "third part" that has been claimed by God (v. 9). When you face "refining" seasons, understand them not as a "cutting off," but as a testing that proves you are "His people." You have direct access to the "fountain" (v. 1) for every need of cleansing, ensuring that you walk in the "Truth" as a bondservant of the King, unashamed of His vision.
9. Reflection
Are you still wearing the "hairy mantle" of your own religious efforts, or have you stepped into the "opened fountain" of the New Creation?
