The Covenantal Resurrection

Moving from the biological “corpse-view” of tradition to the corporate “covenant-view” of the Apostles.

Contrast: Biological Reanimation vs Covenantal Transformation

1. The Foundational Error: Greek Biology vs. Hebrew Covenant

Most modern readers approach the topic of “Resurrection” as if they were reading a medical textbook. They assume the primary problem Jesus came to solve was a biological one: human hearts stopping. This is Greek Dualism, which views the physical body as a cage for the soul that must be reanimated.

In contrast, the Bible defines “Death” as Covenant Separation from the presence of God.

The FPBible Key: The Death that reigned from Adam was never biology. It was exile and the Ministry of Death (the Law). Grave and Hades were emptied and cast into the lake of fire. You cannot understand resurrection until you use that dictionary.

2. A Forensic Investigation into 1 Corinthians 15

Paul did not invent “resurrection” on the road to Damascus. In his master discourse (1 Cor 15), he explicitly states he is preaching what is written in the “Scriptures” (the Old Testament). To decode Paul's “Body” language, we must decode his sources:

A. Hosea 13: Redemption from Idolatry

When Paul cries, “O Death, where is your sting?”, he is quoting Hosea 13:14. In Hosea, the “death” being discussed is the national, spiritual death of Northern Israel due to their idolatry. God was not promising to empty literal graveyards in Hosea; He was promising to restore the covenant life of His people.

B. Isaiah 25: The Feast on the Mountain

Paul quotes Isaiah 25:8 (“Death is swallowed up in victory”). Isaiah places this event specifically when the “veil” is removed from the nations and when God judges the “city of the terrible ones.” This is the transition from the Old City (Jerusalem) to the New City (The Church).

Decoding the Dry Bones - Ezekiel 37

3. The Prophetic Blueprint: Ezekiel 37

Ezekiel 37 is the “dictionary” for biblical resurrection. The prophet sees a valley of dry bones raised to life. If you read this through a Greek lens, you see zombies. If you let God interpret it, you see Fulfillment.

“Then he said to me, 'Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, "Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are completely cut off."'... I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.” — Ezekiel 37:11-12

Israel was physically alive but “dead” in exile. To “rise from the grave” meant to be restored to covenant status. This is the Corporate Body View (CBV): resurrection is the raising of a people from one covenant order into another.

Body of Moses vs. Body of Christ

4. Redefining “The Body” (Soma)

Traditional eschatology asks: “What happens to my body?” Paul's eschatology asks: “What happens to The Body?”

In 1 Corinthians 12:27, Paul defines the “Body” as the Church. In Chapter 15, he describes a transition between two corporate “Bodies” (two covenant identities):

Natural vs. Spiritual (Psychikos vs. Pneumatikos)

Sources of Life Graphic

Paul's contrast in verse 44 is the final blow to biological futurism. The Greek word Psychikos (Natural) means “of the soul/flesh/breath.” The word Pneumatikos (Spiritual) means “driven by the Spirit.”

He is not contrasting “hard matter” vs. “ghostly vapor.” He is contrasting Covenant Sources of Life. The Natural Body was the Law-system (flesh-driven). The Spiritual Body is the New Covenant system (Spirit-driven).

Terrestrial and Celestial Bodies (1 Cor 15:40-49)

When Paul writes of celestial and terrestrial bodies he is not teaching astronomy. He reaches back to Genesis: kinds of glory, then two Adams (1 Cor 15:40-49).

Resurrection is covenantal migration out of the terrestrial age into the celestial reality. That is why the New Jerusalem needs no sun or moon as ruling lights. Full chapter: 1 Corinthians 15.

Sin, Law, Death Chain

5. Defeating the Last Enemy: The Logic of Victory

If resurrection is just biology, then 1 Corinthians 15:56 makes no sense. Why would the “power of sin” be the “Law” if the goal was just to restart physical hearts?

The Forensic Chain of 1 Cor 15:56:

  1. The Law gives Sin its power to condemn.
  2. Sin uses that power to produce the “Sting of Death” (Covenant Condemnation).
  3. Therefore, to defeat Death, Christ had to fulfill and remove the Law.
The Victory: When the Law-system was definitively removed in AD 70, the “power of sin” was broken. Death was “swallowed up” because the mechanism for covenant condemnation no longer existed.

6. The AD 70 Timestamp: “All These Things”

The most vital question is When? The angel in Daniel 12 explicitly asked how long until the resurrection and the end. The answer is the “Silver Bullet” of eschatology:

“It will be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things will be finished.” — Daniel 12:7

The “power of the holy people” was the Temple, the City, and the Priesthood. These were shattered in AD 70. According to the angel's oath, the resurrection was finished when Jerusalem fell. The transition from the Body of Moses to the Body of Christ was complete.

Death HAS BEEN Swallowed Up

7. An Accomplished Reality

You are not living in a “postponed” reality. You are not waiting for a future event to make you “more alive” than you are right now in Christ.

Resurrection is a Settled Fact. The veil is gone. The Law is gone. Death has lost its sting because condemnation has been removed forever. You live in the “Spirit-driven” body (the Church), which possesses eternal life as a present inheritance.

“He who has the Son has life.” — 1 John 5:12
