Daniel 9

The 70 Weeks • The Messiah's Arrival • The Destruction of the City

1. Immediate Context

Daniel has been reading the scrolls of the prophet Jeremiah and realizes that the prophesied 70 years of Babylonian exile are coming to an end. He begins to pray, confessing the sins of his people and pleading for God to restore the desolate sanctuary in Jerusalem.

While he is still praying, the angel Gabriel arrives with an answer that vastly expands Daniel's horizon. God will indeed restore the physical city, but Gabriel outlines a specific 490-year countdown (70 "weeks" of years) until God completely finishes the Old Covenant system. Within this precise timeline, the Messiah will arrive, make atonement for sin, bring in everlasting righteousness, and then the apostate city and sanctuary will be utterly destroyed by a flood of judgment.

Note: The following text highlights the core prayer and the 70 Weeks prophecy (vv. 1-3, 20-27) for study.

1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans,
2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years concerning which Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years.
3 I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
...
20 While I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God for the holy mountain of my God;
21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening offering.
22 He instructed me, and talked with me, and said, “Daniel, I have now come out to give you wisdom and understanding.
23 At the beginning of your petitions the commandment went out, and I have come to tell you; for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.
24 “Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.
25 “Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times.
26 After the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off, and will have nothing. The people of the prince who shall come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will be with a flood, and war will be even to the end. Desolations are determined.
27 He will make a firm covenant with many for one week. In the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. On the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate; and even to the full end, and that determined, wrath will be poured out on the desolate.”

5. Fulfillment Commentary

1) The Mathematical Precision of God (vv. 24–25)

Daniel was praying about a 70-year prophecy. God responds by revealing a 490-year prophecy. From the issuing of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem (given by Artaxerxes to Ezra/Nehemiah), a countdown began. Gabriel splits this into three sections: 7 weeks (49 years to rebuild the streets and walls in troubled times), 62 weeks (434 years of waiting), and a final 1 week (7 years for the climax of the covenant).

Exactly 483 years (69 weeks) after the decree, Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John, anointed by the Spirit, and began His public ministry, declaring: "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand!" (Mark 1:15). Jesus knew the math of Daniel 9. He arrived right on time.

2) The Six Master Objectives (v. 24)

Futurists claim the 70th week is still in our future. But look at the six things Gabriel said *must* happen within those 70 weeks:

If the 70th week has not happened yet, then sin has not been ended, reconciliation has not been made, and everlasting righteousness has not been brought in. To delay the 70th week is to deny the finished work of the cross.

3) The 70th Week: Christ, Not Antichrist (v. 27)

The most devastating error in modern prophecy charts is assigning verse 27 to a future Antichrist. The text says "He will make a firm covenant with many." Who makes covenants in Scripture? God does. Jesus explicitly said at the Last Supper, "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many" (Mark 14:24).

In the middle of that final 7-year week (after three and a half years of ministry), Jesus was "cut off" (crucified). At that exact moment, the veil of the temple was torn in two. Jesus "caused the sacrifice and offering to cease." Even though the Jews kept slaughtering animals for another 40 years until AD 70, those sacrifices were completely void and empty in the eyes of God because the true Lamb had been slain.

4) The Flood of Judgment (v. 26)

The prophecy ends in devastation. Because apostate Jerusalem rejected their Messiah, "the people of the prince who shall come" (the Roman army under Titus) would destroy the city and the sanctuary.

Gabriel says the end will come "with a flood." This is apocalyptic language for an invading army wiping out a nation. In AD 70, the Roman legions flooded Judea, burned the temple to the ground, and poured out the determined wrath upon the desolate city, bringing a violent, permanent end to the Old Covenant age.

8. New Creation Reality

You are not waiting for a future Antichrist to sign a peace treaty in the Middle East. You are reading covenant history for assurance, not headlines for doom. The 70 Weeks are finished. Sin has been dealt with, reconciliation has been made, and everlasting righteousness has been brought in by the blood of the New Covenant. You live completely on the other side of this timeline, resting securely in the finished work of the Messiah.

9. Reflection

Question: How does understanding that the 70th week was fulfilled by Jesus' loving sacrifice, rather than a future dictator's tribulation, change your view of God's character and His timeline?
