The Millennium • The First Resurrection • The Great White Throne Judgment
1. Immediate Context
In Chapter 19, the Beast (Rome) and the False Prophet (the corrupt religious enforcers) were permanently destroyed in the lake of fire. Now, Chapter 20 zooms out to deal with the ultimate spiritual power behind them: the Dragon (Satan), and his chief weapon against humanity: Death.
This chapter uses recapitulation (rewinding the story to tell it from a different perspective). It describes the period between the cross and AD 70—a symbolic "thousand years"—where Satan’s ability to deceive the Gentile nations was bound so the Gospel could spread. It concludes with the final, absolute defeat of Satan and the Great White Throne Judgment, where the Old Covenant realm of "Death and Hades" is thrown into the lake of fire.
1 I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time. 4 I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as didn’t worship the beast nor his image, and didn’t receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead didn’t live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years. 7 And after the thousand years, Satan will be released from his prison, 8 and he will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up over the breadth of the earth, and surrounded the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. Fire came down out of heaven from God and devoured them. 10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever. 11 I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them. 12 I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
3. Fulfillment Notes
The Symbolic Millennium: The number 1,000 in biblical literature rarely functions as literal mathematics. It is the number of ultimate fullness (e.g., God owns the cattle on a "thousand" hills). Revelation explicitly states the events must happen "soon." Inserting a literal 1,000-year delay here destroys the time-frame of the book. The "Millennium" is the 40-year transition period (the generation) between the inauguration of the Kingdom at Pentecost and the consummation of the Kingdom at the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.
The Binding of Satan (v. 2): Satan was not bound from causing all evil. He was bound with one specific restriction: "that he should deceive the nations no more." During the Old Covenant, the Gentile nations were in absolute darkness. At the cross, Jesus bound the "strong man" (Matt 12:29), allowing the Gospel to flood into the Gentile world for the first time in history.
Death and Hades Destroyed (v. 14): Hades (Sheol) was the Old Covenant holding place for the dead. Because Christ defeated death, that entire realm was emptied, judged, and thrown into the lake of fire. It no longer exists for the believer.
4. Annotations
souls of those beheaded — John specifically sees the souls of the martyrs (the same group from Chapter 6 under the altar). They are reigning with Christ in heaven during this transition period, waiting for their blood to be avenged.
the first resurrection — Spiritual resurrection. Believing in Christ and being raised from spiritual death to life (Ephesians 2:6, John 5:24-25). Those who participate in this spiritual resurrection are immune to the "second death" (eternal separation from God).
Gog and Magog — Apocalyptic shorthand (drawn from Ezekiel 38) for the rebellious nations of the earth gathering against God's people.
earth and heaven fled away (v. 11) — The final, ultimate removal of the Old Covenant system and its entire legal structure, making way for the New Heavens and New Earth in Chapter 21.
5. Fulfillment Commentary
1) The "Thousand Years" Explained (vv. 1–3)
To understand the Millennium, you must ask: When did Jesus bind Satan? Jesus Himself answers this in Matthew 12:28-29. He states that if He is casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has come, and He has "bound the strong man" in order to plunder his house.
At the cross, Satan was disarmed (Colossians 2:15). He was bound specifically from deceiving the Gentile nations, allowing Paul and the Apostles to successfully plant the Church across the Roman Empire. This period of Gospel expansion—the 40 years between the cross and AD 70—is the symbolic "thousand years." It was the time of covenant transition.
2) The First Resurrection and the Reigning Saints (vv. 4–6)
John sees the souls of the martyrs (who refused the mark of the Beast) reigning with Christ. Notice that they are souls—this is a heavenly scene, not a physical political kingdom in modern Jerusalem.
What is the "first resurrection"? In John 5:24-25, Jesus said, "He who hears my word and believes... has passed out of death into life. The hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live." Being born again is the first resurrection. If you have experienced the first resurrection (salvation), the "second death" (the lake of fire) has absolutely no power over you.
3) The Short Release and the Final Battle (vv. 7–10)
At the very end of the 40-year transition period, Satan was released for a "short time." This corresponds historically to the terrifying outbreak of the Neronian persecution (AD 64) and the demonic madness that enveloped the Jewish Zealots and the Roman Empire leading up to the Jewish-Roman War.
Satan gathered his forces (Gog and Magog) to surround the "camp of the saints" (the true Church). But before they could completely wipe out Christianity, God intervened with divine judgment. The persecuting powers were destroyed, and Satan, the great deceiver, was thrown permanently into the lake of fire. He was stripped of all authority and power to stop the New Creation.
4) The Great White Throne Judgment (vv. 11–15)
This is the climax of the covenant transition. The Judge sits on the throne, and the old "heaven and earth" (the Old Covenant world and its jurisdiction) completely flee away.
The dead are judged. But notice carefully what happens in verse 14: "Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire."
Hades was the Old Covenant realm of the dead. It was where souls waited for the Messiah's atoning work to be completed. But because Christ's work is finished, the waiting room is abolished. The ultimate enemy—covenantal death—is destroyed. For the believer living today in the New Creation, "death" is merely a physical transition into the immediate, unhindered presence of God. The sting is gone.

This is apocalyptic covenant-judgment imagery anchored in the first-century transition (AD 30–70). See Revelation Appendix: Apocalyptic language 101.
You are not waiting for a literal 1,000-year political kingdom on earth. You are living in the eternal, unshakeable Kingdom of God right now. Satan has been judged, and the realm of Death and Hades has been thrown into the fire. You are reading covenant history for assurance, not headlines for doom. If your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life, you are completely immune to the second death. You stand fully justified before the Great White Throne, covered by the blood of the Lamb.
9. Reflection
Question: How does knowing that "Death and Hades" have already been thrown into the lake of fire change the way you view your own mortality and the loss of believing loved ones?
