The New Jerusalem: A Present Reality

Exploring the "Unwalled City" of the New Covenant

The Architectural Shift

In Zechariah 2, the prophet is shown a city that cannot be measured by human metrics. It is described as "villages without walls" because of the sheer multitude of its inhabitants. This serves as the prophetic blueprint for the New Jerusalem introduced in Revelation 21. While futurist systems wait for a physical, 1,500-mile cube to descend onto the modern Middle East, Fulfilled Eschatology recognizes that the New Jerusalem is a spiritual reality that has already arrived.

The Bride, The City, The Church

The New Testament defines the New Jerusalem not as a collection of stones, but as "the Bride, the Lamb's wife" (Revelation 21:9-10). The Apostle Paul identifies this as "the Jerusalem above... which is our mother" (Galatians 4:26). Therefore, the New Jerusalem is the covenantal community—the Church—fully established in the first century after the old, fleshly Jerusalem was judged in AD 70.

Life in the Unwalled City

Because the New Jerusalem is the perfected state of the New Covenant, its citizens live in a state of absolute spiritual security. The "wall of fire" (Zechariah 2:5) is the indwelling Holy Spirit. The gates are never shut because the light of the Gospel is perpetual. To live in the New Jerusalem is to live in the presence of God right now, enjoying the living waters that flow from the throne of Christ without the need for physical borders or shadows.
