In Zechariah 7:14, God declares that because the people hardened their hearts like flint, He scattered them with a whirlwind, and "the land was desolate after them." This desolation was the direct result of breaking the Old Covenant. However, this historical event served as a typological warning for the climax of the age.
Jesus Christ utilized this exact prophetic language when He stood over the first-century city and wept. He declared, "Behold, your house is left to you desolate" (Matthew 23:38). The "house" was the Temple—the heart of the Old Covenant system. In AD 70, the Roman whirlwind arrived, and the physical land was made desolate one final time to make way for the spiritual, indestructible Kingdom.
The desolation of the earthly city was not a temporary setback for God's plan, but a permanent removal of the "shadows" so that the "substance" could remain. We no longer look for the restoration of a physical, earthly Jerusalem because the New Creation reality has arrived in the heavenly Mount Zion.
