Companion psalms of reign and theophany. Yahweh reigns; the earth is summoned to rejoice; lightning, trembling, and melting mountains attend His presence; He comes to judge with righteousness. This is public kingship language — the same stream that feeds later “coming” and “kingdom” proclamations.
1Yahweh reigns! Let the earth rejoice! Let the multitude of islands be glad!
2Clouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3A fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries on every side.
4His lightning lights up the world. The earth sees, and trembles.
5The mountains melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6The heavens declare his righteousness. All the peoples have seen his glory.
7Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!
8Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced, because of your judgments, Yahweh.
9For you, Yahweh, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods.
10You who love Yahweh, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.
1Sing to Yahweh a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand, and his holy arm, have worked salvation for him.
2Yahweh has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
3He has remembered his loving kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4Make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth! Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises!
5Sing praises to Yahweh with the harp, with the harp and the voice of melody.
6With trumpets and sound of the ram’s horn, make a joyful noise before the King, Yahweh.
7Let the sea roar with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein.
8Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the mountains sing for joy together.
9Let them sing before Yahweh, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
These psalms train the ear for the New Testament’s announcement that the kingdom has drawn near and that the Son of Man comes in glory. God shows up as king; the earth trembles; rivals collapse. In the first-century horizon that includes the temple-centered world that opposed the Messiah. Mountains melting and earth trembling are not primarily physics; they are the Bible’s way of saying that a whole order is being undone before the face of the Lord.
The “new song” is the worship of a people who have seen salvation revealed to the nations and the old adversarial order judged. Joy is the right response to a judgment that vindicates the kingdom.
The Lord already reigns in the Son. The new song is not postponed until a different cosmos; it is the worship of those who live under that reign now.
Does my reading of “judgment” end only in fear — or also in the joy these psalms command when the true King is revealed?
