A prayer of the afflicted that turns to Yahweh’s permanence. Of old He laid the foundation of the earth; the heavens are the work of His hands. They perish and wear out like a garment; He remains the same. Hebrews 1 quotes this of the Son and sets up the letter’s later claim that what is shaken will be removed.
24I said, “My God, don’t take me away in the middle of my days. Your years are throughout all generations.
25Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands.
26They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed.
27But you are the same. Your years will have no end.
28The children of your servants will continue. Their offspring will be established before you.”
Hebrews does not quote Psalm 102 for abstract cosmology alone. The point is the superiority of the Son and the changeability of what is “made.” The same letter says the first covenant was aging out. Psalm 102 supplies the poetic warrant: what is made can be changed like a robe; the Son remains. You do not anchor identity in a garment God has scheduled for change.
The New Covenant is not another robe to wear out. It is participation in the permanence of the Son’s reign and priesthood.
What am I still treating as permanent that Scripture calls a garment ready to be changed?
